The process of brewing starts by boiling wort in the water. Wort is also the mixture you obtain once you mix the malt, water and hops together. Then, cool the mixture. Yeast is the last ingredient that you need to add after the cooling process is complete.

What should you do for your first brew?

If you don’t already have a brewing kit, you need to visit a store that sells brew kits. You will find that there are different types of prepackaged beer kits.

Once you have your kit ready, let’s get into the steps that you need to accomplish for beer brewing.

Plan your brew

Before anything, it is important that you plan your brewing process. Planning is essential to ensure that you optimize the use of your ingredients.

Make sure your equipment is sanitized

This is an essential step because bacteria that can ruin the beer brewing process. When your beer is contaminated, this will leave you with an unpleasant brew and ultimately, you will waste a lot of resources.

One way that you can sanitize your equipment is by making a sanitizing solution using chlorine bleach.

Boil all your equipment for 15 minutes and make sure that you rinse everything. Rinsing your equipments thoroughly ensures that there are no left over chlorine which can create strange flavors in your beer.

Start boiling

Boiling is essential because it ensures your wort is well sanitized and decreases the chances of getting a bacterial infection. The large your boil, the more time it will take for it to cool.

Just remember to estimate the cooling time well and stir it until it cools properly. Now, pour in the content of your content into the water. It usually takes 15 minutes for the boil to cool properly.

Leave your wort to cool

Typically, people will use water in the sink to cool the wort.  If you want to decrease the cooling time, use a bathtub filled with ice. Make sure the pot is covered to avoid contamination and don’t forget to sanitize your pot’s lid.

Remember that as your wort cools, there is a higher chance of bacteria contamination. To avoid this, experiment with different methods to cool the wort faster.

Prep your yeast

Depending on the type of yeast you use, there are several steps that you can use for this process. When using dry yeast, make sure to rehydrate it.

For sanitization purposes, boil about 350 ml of water. After 10 minutes of boiling it, leave the yeast to cool for half an hour.

Pour the wort

Now, you can pour the mixture into the carboy. Typically, wort has particulates which float in it. When pouring, try to avoid these particulates from flowing into the carboy. These particulates can bring out odd flavors in beer.

Pitch the yeast

Once your wort has called to at least 70°F, you can now add the yeast into it. Yeast does not work well in a temperature which is excessively high.

Then, fill the airlock with water or vodka. It is recommended to use vodka because bacteria do not easily tamper with vodka.

Ferment the mixture

During the fermentation process, you can put the fermenter in any dark spot. Avoid aeration when the process begins because it can bring out stale flavors in your beer.

Cover it using a dark towel because ultraviolet rays can also bring out unpleasant aromas in beer.

Use a hydrometer to determine if the fermentation process is complete. The period that you should leave your beer to ferment is anywhere from 10 days to 2 weeks.

Bottle your beer

Remember always to sanitize anything that will come in contact with your beer. Therefore, sanitize your bottles and bottle caps. You can do this by putting the bottles in the dishwasher and boiling the bottle caps.

Make sure to fill up the bottle all the way to the brim before you remove the filler. Underfilled bottles have the risk of exploding because the pressure can build up on the carbon dioxide.

Wait for another 2-4 weeks

Before you can enjoy your beer, you have to let your beer bottle to condition for at least 2 to 4 weeks. For carbon dioxide to fully dissolve into the beer, you should wait for at least four weeks.
